Book one. ‘A Boy’s Journey’

From the Author – Michael Richard Brown
“Take a journey with me through my first eighteen years. My first nine years were spent in an Essex council house, happiest only when I was up a tree or with my dog. Life was shite for all of us. Dad knew something had to change. He shunted us off as tenpound poms to an Australian immigration hostel for two godforsaken summers. A better life, he said. It wasn’t. My parents endured the torment. I went bush. When we shifted to Christchurch, I was glad for them, but I missed the bush, something fierce. Early high school was a disaster for this shy introvert. At fifteen I tried for the priesthood and failed. I got sacked from jobs and didn’t care. I needed to find myself. Then, I met Cynthia.”

  1. J.C. Motueka

Motueka writer Mike Brown delivers us a lesson in both life, and memoir writing, in this opening volume of his three-part autobiography. This is a book which delivers a ripping good yarn …. This is a book you’ll want to lend around. Talk about. Give as a gift. It’s the perfect choice for all those men in the family who think that they don’t much like reading. And watch out soon for Volume Two, Fly Like an Eagle – Fall Like a Stone. This is going to be a much talked-about book-series across the region. Don’t miss out!

Mike – loved your first book as I knew I would. You write with real heart humour and such love for your parents and family. A lot of what you wrote resonated with me – growing up in a large Catholic family with a father who worked on the railway, and the struggles that came with that.
I cant wait for book 2 – Fly like an eagle – fall like a stone
Graham is going to enjoy his Christmas present book!

    Hi Mike
With Xmas and family distractions have just finished but what a great read with a great life well documented. Loved your power of description with often a very perceptive similarly. Where does “slick as an auctioneer” come from but so appropriate?
Really looking forward to the next editions and learning how you and Cynthia add several more kids and thrive!
Congratulations again Mike and wishing you and family a great Xmas and a very productive “scribble” in 2026.
    Cheers
    Derek

What a great book Mike! I loved it from the first to the last page. You’ve got a very, very engaging (and easy to read) writing style and it really feels as a reader, that we’re taking the journey with you! Can’t wait for the next two books. 10/10 would read again!
